US secretary of state Hillary Clinton and China’s foreign minister will meet here in Washington next month to work out details of talks between the presidents of their two countries in April. Clinton met the Chinese President HJT and Premier WJB Saturday in Beijing on the last stop of the tour of four Asian nations, leadings follow talks which focused on working more closely on climate change, security and crossing the global financial crisis.
An exchange of rocket fire between Lebanon and Israel is sparking renewed tension. Israeli and Lebanese officials say a rocket lunched from Lebanon and landed in Israeli Arab village in the Galilee region Saturday. The attack wounded 3 people, while two others were treated for shock. Lebanese official said the second rocket malfunctioned and landed in Lebanon. Israel responded by launching a series of rockets into Lebanon. No injuries were reported. Israeli official said the initial attack had taken place without the knowledge of the Lebanese government. The militant group Hezbollah denied any involvement.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry Saturday. This is the latest in a series of contacts between the two countries., as Edward Yeranian reports.
“Syrian government TV emphasized the importance of Senator Kerry’s visit and showed President Bashar al-Assad smiling and gesturing energetically, as both men met to explore improving relations between the United States and Syria. Relations between the two countries have been strained for years. Syria’s support for Hamas and Hezbollah has been a point of contention with Washington. The United States also has accused Syria of allowing militants to cross its border into Iraq. Syria insists it is doing all it can to safeguard its long, porous border. In the past few days, there has been a flurry of U.S. congressmen passing through Syria, including Senator John Kerry, who arrived Saturday - a further sign that Washington is engaging in a new openness toward Damascus. President Barack Obama recently spoke of opening a new dialogue with old foes, alluding to countries like Syria and Iran, if they would “unclench their fists. Edward Yeranian for VOA news Cairo.”
President Obama says Saturday that the US government has begun reducing the taxes for most working Americans. We’ll see the benefits in paychecks by April 1st. In his weekly radio address, Mr. Obama said the average US family will keep an extra 65 dollars a month.
“Because what we did 95 % of all working families will get a tax cut, and keeping what the promise I have made on the campaign, and I am pleased to announce that this morning. The treasury department began directing employers to reduce the amount of taxes withheld from paychecks.”
The tax cut which will fulfill Mr. Obama’s campaign pledge will be founded by 787 billion dollars stimulus package after last week to create jobs and revive the trouble economy.
In the weekly Republican response, representative David Campbell of Michigan says this party wants to work Mr Obama to rescue the economy, within what he called a responsible way that is not burden future generations with a mountain of debt.
“Republicans genuinely want to work with the President to solve these problems - in a responsible way that does not burden our children and grandchildren with a mountain of debt.”
Also Saturday US news media aganda reported the tales of Mr. Obama’s first federal budget. The president has set schedule to deliver a summary of the spending plan to congress on Thursday. According unnamed administration officials report says Mr. Obama plans to significantly reduce the budget opposite during his first 4 years of term in the office.
Iraqi official has reopened Abu Ghraib, one of the country’s most notorious prisons, after renovating the facility just west of Baghdad and promising more humane treatment of prisoners.
