Xiushui Street Market is a clothing market on the East Chang'an Avenue in Beijing. The silk clothes sold here are popular with visitors from other countries because of their traditional Chinese style. It also used to sell imitation brand-name goods but the situation has completely changed due to the joint efforts of the businessmen themselves and a market administrative department.
Now all the clothes for sale are Chinese brands and licensed brands.
Forty of the Silk Street businessmen were recognized as "model businessman who protect intellectual property rights" in January 2007.
Our reporter Wang Jing takes us shopping at this bustling market.
REPORTER: Xiushui Street Market used to be a two to three hundred-metre long clothes market on East Chang'an Avenue in downtown Beijing. In the 1980s and 90s it was well known for selling silks, and was popular with many foreign visitors because it was not far from the area where foreigners hung out. To meet the needs of those who followed famous brands, some shopkeepers began to sell imitations of brandname goods, attracting foreign buyers with their low prices.
Determined to protect the brand names and customers' interests, relavant government department began to strengthen the administration of the market three years ago, making shopkeepers fully aware that it is against the law to sell fakes.
Meanwhile, more than a thousand sellers moved stores into a new seven-story building after the market was restructured. Hua Shijun, a shopkeeper who has manned a clothing stall on the market for many years, has changed from selling fakes to selling the clothes of licensed brands. He instructs customers to buy certified goods.
"I mainly sold imitations in the past, but now I have changed my idea and stopped selling them. Still, some customers come from other countries, believing that this is a good place for buying counterfeit goods. They come here to look for them. So we are trying to change their old concepts and we are doing fairly well."
Hua's clothes store is 150 square metre with a great variety of goods, including hats, shoes and clothes. New products are matched up and displayed according to the latest fashion.
The reform of Mr Hua is not an uncommon tale in Xiushui Street. Other businessmen have taken the same approach. All of the imitations of well-known brands - like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Chanel - which could once have been found here, have been replaced by licensed Chinese brands. .
Apart from clothing and adornment shops, there are a number of jeweller's and sellers of traditional Chinese folk handicrafts. With various certified products available, the restructured Xiushui Street Market attracts more customers from all over the world.
Jim Michael from Canada has been to the market twice in his 20 day stay in Beijing and found it impressive.
"I have lots of fun. Bargaining is fun. People are very nice. Products are very good-high quality. My wife-she found lots of stuff and I found lots of stuff-purses, jackets, sweaters, everything. Had to buy a new suitcase to put everything inside to take home. I don't have enough room in my suitcase. Have to buy a big, big suitcase to put everything inside"
Visitors from foreign countries are interested in the time-honoured clothes stores and hat stores that have newly opened in the market, and a branch of Rui Fu Xiang is one of the favourites. Rui Fu Xiang, a shop selling silk and woolen fabrics, has a history of more than 100 years. Its branch on Xiushui Street is 160 square metres, with over 100 material products. Zhou Guoping, general manager of the shop, says that the material sold in their shop is of a superb texture, and purchased directly from cities famous for silk production, including Suzhou and Hangzhou.
"Our goods are the same as those sold in the headquarter. They are specially provided for us from Suzhou and Hangzhou. There are quality tests to guarantee that their quality reaches the required standard. We must be responsible to our customers."
Rui Fu Xiang's fabrics are sold well for their exquisite quality, and the delicately-made Chinese traditional clothes also fascinate buyers from other countries, with their oriental classic beauty. Impressed by the samples displayed in the store, some of the customers even ask the staff in the shop to tailor them a traditional silk outfit on the site.
Since many of the foreign visitors could only enjoy a short stay in Beijing, Rui Fu Xiang has started a new service - tailoring overnight.
"Our USP is to make suits within 24 hours. We have several cars driving in shifts day and night, to guarantee that we can deliver suits to our customers on time. This service is particularly welcomed by foreigners."
Xiushui Street Market has been funded with 30 million RMB, for the protection of intellectual property rights, through encouraging sellers to sell national brands and licensed brands. Wang Zili, general manager of Xiushui Street Clothing Market Co., Ltd. talked about their purpose in taking this action.
"The new Xiushui Street Market that we are going to create is a market of culture, fashion, creativity and brands. Our core issue is to promote the licensed selling of brands. To achieve this goal, we have lowered the rent, with the hope that sellers may get a license out of their own will."
Already, most of the businessmen have been licensed or partly licensed. The change that has taken place in the market demonstrates the fact that China is making more efforts to protect intellectual property rights. Such a change has drawn the attention of Paul Ranjard, chairman of the European Chamber's Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Working Group. He came to the market to award the "model businessman in protecting intellectual property rights" to 40 sellers. He offered a vigorous nod of approval to the achievements made in Xiushui Street.
"This is when we extremely satisfy to be able to witness the improvement in order to resolute these difficulties. And we sincerely praise the excellent work achieved so far by the Beijing government, the Beijing Court, and the silk management. This silk market would become the most famouse example of China's continuing efforts to fight counterfeiting and yet retaining its advantage over its competitors in Beijing."
