Autumn in the country
When I was very young, I thought autumn in the country was the saddest time. I didn't like it one bit. When the wind blew the leaves off the trees, I used to bang on the window and say, " Bad wind, go away! "
To a little child, such as I was then, the leaves look so bright and happy. They were the color of my toy fire truck and warm mittens and Mom's orchids. The wind seemed mean as it ripped away at them.
Goshh. I didn't know that by autumn the leaves had done all the work they could do. ( Leaves help make food for the tree. ) I don't even know that there would be more leaves next summer.
Now that I'm more grown up, I don't mind the smell of the smoke that rises from a pile of burning autumn leaves. I know that there will be more leaves and blossoms and shady places for birds to build their nests in. One autumn when I was very young, I remember hurrying outside on a frosty morning to break the crust of ice that covered the birdbath.
Then I ran back into the house and peered out the window to watch all the birds playing in the water. Hardly any did. Mom explained that most of the birds had flown south to be warm. Mom said they'd be back next spring. Dad said so, too. I didn't really believe it, though. How could those birds, some of them smaller than my hand, fly as far as big airplanes fly?
Now when I see a flock of birds heading south in a V as neat as an arrow, I'm happy for them. And for me, too. I know that they'll return all strong and healthy and decorate our trees and strut across our spring lawn as if they owned the place. In autumn our pond is as still as mirror. Nothing seems to move in it except the reflection of the fluffy, floating clouds.
When I was very young, I used to stir the pond with a stick. I missed the frogs and turtles and fish. I wanted to wake them up. Dad said they were asleep down at the bottom of the pond. Luckily, my stick wasn't very long, and nothing happened. Now I know that all those creatures need the quiet and warmth and darkness that can be found only deep in our pond in the autumn. They need a time to grow. So I'm going to wait.
Saying goodbye in autumn isn't saying goodbye forever.
