Set amidst the graceful splendour of Sydney Harbour,presiding like a queen over the bustle and brashness of a modern city striving to forge a financial reputation in a tough commercial world,it is a reminder to all Australians of their deep and abiding love of all things cultural.
这个set amidst 是在……中的意思,可是放在这里,怎么也翻译不好.它是什么词性?介词,副词?
好像这个set amidst很常见,想像这个也是,也帮忙看下:Edinburgh Zoo is set amidst 197.6 hectares of parkland.
而且presiding,是谁presiding呢?有这个presiding就一定先有个动词吧,动词在哪里?是It is 的is
还有这个It is的It指代Sydney Oper House,从哪里看出指这个,为什么不是指Sydney Harbour呢?（这句话前面还有一句的）
前面一句是：
Its distinctive and highly original shape has been likened to everything from the sails of a sailing ship to broken eggshells,but few would argue with the claim that the Opera House is a major contribution to world architecture.
还有划横线的部分我也不会翻译,觉得很奇怪.
悉尼歌剧院它独特的原始外形像远航而来的帆打破鸟巢?会不会太奇怪的翻译啊?我怎么也想像不到这和我看到的悉尼歌剧院的丝毫想像这处啊.
还有一句的phrase有点歧义,不怎么理解.
……（rehaearsal rooms and others) were either made considerably smaller or cut out altogether.这个cut out是指全部还是部分的?
我的理解：排练室和其他要不或多或少的造小了,要么彻底割舍不造了.

Set amidst 可以看成一个非谓语词组,其中set是过去分词,表被动：悉尼歌剧院是“被”安置在这里.显然此处不可能强调施动方.presiding也是非谓语动词,其主语依然是悉尼歌剧院,即主句中“it is a reminder to all ”的“it”.
整句联系起来就是悉尼歌剧院1,被安放/建设在优美而壮丽的悉尼湾中；2,像一个女王；3,对所有澳大利亚人的提醒作用.1与2是从句,3是主句.
from...to...是一个搭配：“它的外形像任何事物：从远航船只的帆到破碎的蛋壳（,都可以用来描述它的形状）.”
至于最后一句,我认为你的理解是正确的.
