This question concerns to the lesson 30 of the third book (developing skills) of NCE,these are two sample sentences:1.Fearing the authorities,Eric [remained in hiding] after the war as well.2.When their father died,they thought it their duty to [keep Eric in hiding].I don't get it whether the word 'hiding' means the hiding place or it is just a gerund in both these sentences.Anybody knows?

when people say doing sth. , the gerund is usually regarded as a noun.

In that case above, the gerund means the condition in which the persona hid.
