in front表示某物体之外的前面.
in the front表示某物体之内的前部.如：
1.There are some tall trees in front of the classroom.（大树应当在教室之外的前面）
2.There is a teachers' desk in/at the front of the classroom.（讲桌应当在教室之内的前部）
举个例子来区别他们的不同拉
比如:
一：
I go along the road.(我沿着大街走）
不管这条街是朝哪个方向,你是沿着走.强调于墙平行而行.
二：
i go down the road.（我沿着大街走下去）.
这个句子有二个意思.
一是：从你这里开始,向大街的另一头走去.有方向性.英语中,通常以说话者为中心,用UP表示上,down 表示下.
比如,i am going down to the lobby of the hotel(这个具体表示的一定是你从楼层下到大堂,而不是相反）.
二是,大街有高低度,意思是你从大街高的这边向低处走去.
而go across是指穿过.
